The five root positions
Every scale here plays through five movable box patterns, each named after the string its root sits on — 2, 5, 3, 1, 4 Root — cycling up the neck in that order to tile the whole fretboard. Learn the shapes once and they work in every key.
Real playing crosses box boundaries, so the Connected view labels the entire neck in one key at once, marking each box's home root in its own color — you never lose your place. Box view isolates one position for memorizing.
Scales and modes
Pick major, natural minor, any of the seven modes, or the pentatonics. Most are the same seven notes seen from a different home note, so switching scale just moves the root to a new string — the box you call “2 Root” in major reads as “5 Root” in minor. Pentatonics drop the 4th and 7th. (Major is also called Ionian; natural minor, Aeolian.)
