Harmony — how chords connect

Building chords is only the start. Harmony is how those chords link into progressions that feel like going somewhere.

If building chords is how you make a single word, harmony is how you string those words into a sentence — one that feels like it's going somewhere and then arrives.

Harmony has two halves

The word "harmony" quietly covers two different jobs, and keeping them apart makes everything else click:

The vertical half is chords — notes stacked in thirds. This lesson is about the horizontal half: why some chord-to-chord moves feel natural and others feel wrong. That's not taste or luck. There's a system, and it has three ideas.

Idea 1 — a key is a chord family

Pick a key and you don't just get a scale — you get seven chords that belong together. Build a triad on each note of the C major scale and this family falls out:

These seven sound good together because they're built from the same seven notes. Most songs spend their whole life inside one family, which is exactly why they hang together. (Where the family comes from — and why some are minor — is the scales and keys lesson.)

Idea 2 — each chord has a function

Being in the same family doesn't make every chord feel the same. Each one has a function — a job in the story. Three jobs carry almost everything:

The leap here is to stop hearing chord names (C, F, G) and start hearing chord jobs (home, away, tension). That's the ear of harmony.

Idea 3 — tension and resolution give direction

Line those three jobs up in order and you get a tiny complete story:

Home (C), step away (F), reach the tense one (G), and G leans hard back to C. That last move — dominant → tonic (G → C) — is the strongest sense of arrival in Western music.

Why does G pull so hard toward C? The note B lives inside the G chord, and B sits just a half step below C — the tightest, most magnetic distance there is. The ear hears that B straining to snap up to C, so G feels unfinished until C answers it. That leaning note has a name: the leading tone.

That "leave → tension → resolve" arc is the skeleton under thousands of songs:

Putting the three together

  • Key is the stage — which seven chords are on the table (C major → C·Dm·Em·F·G·Am·Bdim).
  • Function is the casting — each chord's role (home / away / tension).
  • Tension → resolution is the plot — leaving home, passing through tension, coming back.

Together they answer the one question harmony exists to answer: why does C naturally lead to F, G and Am — and why does the music keep wanting to return to C?

In one line: harmony is two things — stacking notes into chords, and connecting those chords into progressions. Inside a key's chord family, each chord has a function — home (tonic), away (subdominant), tension (dominant) — and music moves by leaving home, building tension, and resolving home.
