Two words that get tangled all the time: scale and key. The short version —
- a scale is the material: a ladder of notes to build with;
- a key is what you get when you pick one of those notes as home.
Same bricks, different house. Let's take them one at a time.
A scale is a ladder of notes
A scale lays out the notes a piece will use, low to high, inside one octave. The major scale everyone knows is seven notes — here's C major, sitting neatly on the white keys:
Out of the twelve available notes, a scale picks seven. That's the raw material — every melody and every chord in the piece comes from these notes.
What actually defines a scale: whole and half steps
C isn't special. What makes a scale a major scale is the pattern of gaps between its notes — whole steps (W) and half steps (H):
Start that exact pattern on any note and you get a major scale in that key. Start it on G:
Sharps and flats aren't rules — they're results
Notice we didn't decide to add an F♯ to G major. We just walked the pattern, and to keep a whole step between E and F♯ we had to raise F. The sharp fell out of the spacing automatically:
That's the big idea: you don't memorise which notes get a sharp — you walk the whole/half-step pattern and the accidentals appear on their own. Every key is the same pattern, just started in a different place.
From scale to chords — the whole chain
This is the section that unlocks guitar chords. It's also where beginners get lost, because the same seven notes wear three different name tags at once. So let's walk the chain slowly and name each step out loud. We'll use A major as our example.
Step 1 — the key gives you a scale. Walk the major pattern from A and you get seven notes. (Three of them land on black keys, so you get sharps — C♯, F♯, G♯ — exactly as the pattern demands.)
Step 2 — number the notes. These are the scale degrees. Count up from home: A is the 1st, B the 2nd, C♯ the 3rd, D the 4th, E the 5th, F♯ the 6th, G♯ the 7th. That number — a note's position in the key — is its scale degree (it's the small number under each note above).
Step 3 — build a chord on a degree by stacking thirds. Stand on any scale degree, then skip-a-note, skip-a-note to grab three notes: the chord's root, 3rd and 5th. Do it on the 2nd degree (B), taking only notes that are already in the A-major scale:
B, D, F♯ — that's a B minor chord. So in A major, the chord on the 2nd degree is Bm. That's the whole move: degree → stack 1·3·5 → chord.
The one thing to keep straight — there are two kinds of numbers.
- A scale degree counts a note's place in the key. In A major, B is the 2nd degree.
- Chord tones (1·3·5) count the notes inside one chord. In Bm, B is the root (1), D is the 3rd, F♯ is the 5th.
So the very same B is the 2nd degree of the key and the 1st (root) of its own chord. When guitarists say "the two chord" or write "ii," they mean the chord built on the 2nd scale degree — here, Bm.
Step 4 — do all seven, and the qualities are fixed. Repeat on every degree and you get the key's whole chord family. Because the scale's half steps always fall in the same spots, each degree's chord quality never changes — the 1st is always major, the 2nd always minor, and so on:

The quality pattern — major · minor · minor · major · major · minor · diminished — is identical in every major key. Learn it once as I ii iii IV V vi vii° and you know the chords of all twelve keys; only the letters change. (In C major, with no sharps at all, the same pattern gives C · Dm · Em · F · G · Am · Bdim.)
Why this matters for guitar: almost every song lives inside one key's family. Once you can go key → scale → degrees → 1·3·5 chords, you know which chords belong together — and why "the 2 chord" in A major has to be Bm. Not guesswork; just the pattern.
Scale vs. key: material vs. home
So where does "key" come in? A scale is just a set of notes. A key is that set with a home note — a tonic — that everything leans toward and resolves back to.

This is why relative keys exist. C major and A minor use the exact same seven notes — but call C home and you're in C major; call A home and you're in A minor:
Naming a key
The name is just the home note + major or minor: home on C with a major home chord → C major; home on A with a minor home chord → A minor. And "harder" keys aren't harder scales — they're just further from the no-sharps-no-flats center:

It's the same thing on the guitar
A guitar "scale shape" isn't a different thing from the theory — it's the same seven notes, shown as positions on the neck. Here's C major across the whole fretboard:
In one line: a scale is a ladder of notes, defined by its whole/half-step pattern; add a home note (tonic) and you have a key. Walk the pattern and sharps/flats appear on their own — and the same seven notes give you the key's whole chord family.
