Play in G major and every F turns into F♯ — all night long. Rather than mark that sharp on every single F, music writes it once, at the very start of the staff. That little cluster of sharps or flats is the key signature, and there's a beautiful map that explains exactly which ones a key carries: the circle of fifths.
A key signature is "declared once"
A key signature is the set of sharps or flats a key uses, printed right after the clef so you don't have to re-mark every note. See three sharps at the front of a piece and you know: every F, C and G in it is played sharp, unless told otherwise.
Why does a key need them at all? Because — as scales and keys showed — a major scale is a fixed pattern of whole and half steps, and starting that pattern anywhere but C forces some notes to bend. G major needs one sharp to keep its spacing; those aren't decorations, they're results of the pattern. The key signature just collects them in one place.
The center is C — zero sharps, zero flats
Here's the anchor for everything that follows: C major has no sharps and no flats. It's the one key that sits perfectly on the white keys, so its key signature is empty. Its relative minor, A minor, shares that same empty signature.
Every other key is measured by how far it sits from this center — and the ruler is the interval of a perfect fifth (seven half steps, → intervals).
The circle of fifths
Stack perfect fifths and the twelve keys close into a ring. Start at C (top), step a fifth clockwise to G, another to D, and so on — twelve steps later you're back at C.
The magic is what each step does to the key signature:
- Clockwise (up a fifth): each step adds exactly one sharp. C → G → D → A → E → B…
- Counter-clockwise (down a fifth): each step adds exactly one flat. C → F → B♭ → E♭…
So the further you travel from C in either direction, the more accidentals the key carries. Three steps clockwise lands on A major:
Why exactly one accidental per step
Because a fifth is the closest possible relationship. Move from C major to G major and the two scales share six of their seven notes — only one note has to change (F becomes F♯) to keep the major pattern intact. That single changed note is the one new sharp.
That's why neighbours on the circle are the most closely related keys: adjacent keys differ by a single accidental. It's why a song can slip from C to G and back without sounding like it moved to another planet — they're one sharp apart.
The new sharp is always the key's 7th degree. G major's new sharp, F♯, sits a half step below G — its leading tone. That's no coincidence, and it's why the sharps appear in the fixed order F♯ C♯ G♯ D♯ A♯ E♯ — each is a fifth above the last, the circle drawing itself a second time.
The counts, at a glance
Reading outward from C, here's what each key carries. The sharps always accumulate in the order F♯ C♯ G♯ D♯ A♯, and the flats in the mirror-image order B♭ E♭ A♭ D♭ G♭.

Notice the sharp order (F C G D A…) and the flat order (B E A D G…) are exact reverses of each other — the same circle, walked the opposite way.
Reading a key from its signature
Because the pattern is fixed, you can run it backwards and name a key straight from its accidentals:
- Sharps: take the last sharp and go up one half step. Three sharps end on G♯; a half step up is A → A major. (The last sharp is the leading tone, so home is right above it.)
- Flats: the second-to-last flat names the key. Three flats (B♭ E♭ A♭) → second-to-last is E♭ → E♭ major. (One flat, F major, is the exception to memorise.)
One signature, two keys. Every key signature is shared by a major key and its relative minor — three sharps means A major or F♯ minor. Which one you're in depends on where the music comes to rest, not on the signature alone.
