Every song you've ever heard is built from the same tiny box of parts. This is that box. Learn what's inside and the rest of music theory turns out to be just rearranging these pieces.
Music stands on two pillars
Before the notes, one map. Music is made of two independent things, and it helps to know which one you're looking at:

Think of a melody: pitch is which notes you sing, rhythm is how long you hold each one. You need both to make music. These lessons dig into the pitch pillar — rhythm is its own separate world, covered elsewhere.
A note is just a pitch
A note is a single sound with a pitch — a "how high or low" value. Play a piano from left to right and the notes climb higher and higher. Everything else in this lesson is about how we chop up that ladder of highness.
There are exactly 12 notes
Here's the whole foundation in one sentence: Western music divides the octave into 12 equally-spaced steps, and those 12 notes are all there is. One step is the smallest move in the system — a half step (or semitone).
Climb 12 half steps and you land back where you started — the same note name, just higher. Above and below, the same 12 notes repeat forever.
That's why a piano with 88 keys and a guitar with 22 frets aren't overwhelming: both are the same 12 notes repeating. Learn the 12 and you've met every note there is.
7 letters + sharps and flats
Here's the first thing that trips people up: there are 12 notes but only 7 letter names.
The confusion: 12 notes, 7 letters — where do the other 5 names come from? The 7 letters are the white keys. The 5 black keys don't get their own letters — they borrow a neighbor's name with a symbol attached.
The seven plain letters are the white keys:
C D E F G A B
The other five (the black keys) are named by nudging a neighbor a half step:
- ♯ (sharp) = up a half step. C♯ is "one half step above C."
- ♭ (flat) = down a half step. D♭ is "one half step below D."
- C♯ and D♭ are the same black key — same pitch, two names depending on which neighbor you count from.
Lay out all 12 in order and it looks like this:

The white keys aren't evenly spaced
You'd expect neighboring letters to always sit the same distance apart. They don't — and this one quirk quietly shapes all the theory that follows.
- half step = the smallest move (next key over, one fret on guitar)
- whole step = two half steps
Look at where the black keys sit and you'll notice two gaps have no black key between them:
C — D — E - F — G — A — B - C

Only E–F and B–C are half steps. Every other pair of neighboring white keys is a whole step. Don't worry about why yet — just file away that the white keys are unevenly spaced. That single fact is what later explains why intervals come in different sizes and why scales have the shape they do.
An octave brings you home
Walk up 12 half steps — eight white keys, C up to the next C — and the name comes back around. That distance is an octave.
An octave up doubles the frequency, and your ear hears it as "the same note, higher." It's why a man and a woman singing the same tune an octave apart still sound like they're singing the same melody. So no matter how high notes climb, underneath it's always these same 12, repeating.

This lesson really only handed you two raw materials — the 12 notes and the half step. Almost everything else is a recombination:

- Stack notes a third apart → a chord
- Pick one note as home → a scale and key
