Why I-IV-V — the three pillar chords

Three chords cover every note of the major scale and define the key. Meet the pillars of Western harmony.

Pick a key and you get seven chords to work with. So why do countless songs — folk, blues, punk, half the campfire songbook — lean on just three of them? Because I, IV and V are the load-bearing chords: the fewest you can pick and still say everything a key needs to say.

The three that matter most

In any major key, three of the seven chords come out major — the bright, sturdy ones. In C major those are the 1st, 4th and 5th degrees:

The colours above are the whole story in miniature. Each pillar plays one of the three jobs a key needs, and no two overlap:

That is exactly the shape of a tiny story: leave home (IV), build tension (V), come home (I). One chord can't tell a story; these three can. And crucially, the V → I move is what nails the key down — more on that below.

Why these three cover the whole scale

Here is the part guitarists feel before they can explain it. Write out the three chords' notes — each is a triad, its root, 3rd and 5th — and something clicks:

Every single note of the scale lives in at least one of the three pillars. C, E and G come from I; F, A and C from IV; G, B and D from V — and between them they account for all seven: C D E F G A B, nothing missing.

Why that's the whole trick. Because I, IV and V together contain every note of the key, any melody in the key is guaranteed to fit over one of them. That is the secret behind every "three-chord song" — you're never stuck, because one of the three always has the note you need.

Why major, and why neighbours

Two more reasons these three, and not some other trio.

They're the bright ones. Of the seven chords in a major key, exactly three are major — I, IV and V. The rest are minor (ii, iii, vi) or diminished (vii°). So the pillars are also the key's most solid, cheerful building blocks; you reach for the darker chords later, for colour.

They're closest together. On the circle of fifths, a key's IV and V sit immediately on either side of I — the three nearest neighbours in the whole circle. Chords that sit close on the circle share the most notes, so they flow into each other effortlessly.

The classic frame: 12-bar blues

Put the pillars in the most famous three-chord container there is — the 12-bar blues (here in G, so I = G, IV = C, V = D):

Same three jobs, same three pillars, endless songs stacked on top. Add a 7th to each and it gets even bluesier — but the frame underneath is still just I, IV, V.

In one line: I, IV and V are the pillars of a key because between them their notes cover all seven scale degrees — so they can harmonise any melody in the key — while I rests, IV leaves and V pulls home, with V → I defining the key itself.
