Opening Guitar Pro files

View, play and print .gp, .gpx, .gp5 and MusicXML files in the browser — no upload, no install.

Already have a library of Guitar Pro files? The Viewer opens them straight from your disk — notation and tab, playback, track selection and A4 printing — without installing anything. Files are read in your browser and never uploaded.

Opening a file

  1. Go to tellmescore.com/viewer and click Open file…, or drag a file onto the score area.
  2. Supported formats: Guitar Pro 3–5 (.gp3, .gp4, .gp5), Guitar Pro 6 (.gpx), Guitar Pro 7/8 (.gp) and MusicXML (.xml, .musicxml, .mxl). The format is detected from the file contents, so a wrong extension is not a problem.
  3. Opening another file replaces the current one — nothing is kept between visits.

Tracks

Band scores show the first track by default. Tick the other tracks under Show to add them as extra staves, or click All. Drum tracks are rendered as percussion notation. Playback always plays every track in the file, whichever ones are shown.

Layout

Automatic fits as many bars per line as the page width allows. As in file uses the bars-per-line layout saved inside the file; Guitar Pro 6, 7 and 8 files carry that information, older .gp3–.gp5 files and MusicXML do not, so the button is disabled for them.

Printing and PDF

Print / Save as PDFopens your browser's print dialog with the shown tracks laid out on A4 pages, exactly like printing from the editor. Choose Save as PDF as the destination to export a file. Page breaks fall between systems, never through one.

The engine lays the music out itself, so the pages are tidy but not a pixel-for-pixel copy of what Guitar Pro prints. Check the first page in the dialog preview before printing a long score.

Editing a track in the editor

Open in editor… converts one track into a TellMeScore song, saves a copy to My Songs in your browser and opens it in the editor. The original file is not changed. Pick the guitar track in the dialog; drum tracks and parts that are not six-string instruments can't be opened as the guitar track. Optionally pick a second track as the melody: its top notes become the vocal melody staff shown above the tab (any pitched track works, including vocal and keyboard parts), and its lyrics come along. The tracks you have ticked in the viewer are preselected.

Before anything happens, the dialog lists what is kept (bars, notes, markings, chords, sections, lyrics), what is not carried over (the other tracks, a second voice, tempo changes inside a bar, volume and pan automation) and what is simplified (bend and whammy curves become plain values, tuplets other than triplets are kept but the editor's rhythm tools only understand triplets, 64th notes become 32nds). If a bar's note lengths no longer add up, the dialog names the bar so you can fix it after import.

The imported song is a normal TellMeScore song: it autosaves, prints, and saves as .tmscore.json. Saving back to a Guitar Pro file is not available yet.

The fastest way to learn is to try it yourself.
